Jack Canfield On Personal Power Development Skills

Jack Canfield is best known for co-creating the Chicken Soup book series with Mark Victor Hansen. He is the author of the highly acclaimed book on Self Development Skills “The Success Principles” which is a 473 page tome teaching “How To Get From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be!”

Jack Canfield obviously speaks deeply from his own experience. He began life as the son of an air force pilot with a difficult family background and no real future hope, and studied personal development skills for himself, learning self belief, and eventually becoming a renowned author. You can rise from nowhere in particular, work on yourself within and learn the fundamentals of success: apply these strategies every day with discipline and the principles will transform your life beyond your wildest dreams!

The very first thing to assume is 100% responsibility for what happens to you. This is the major stumbling block. If you cannot assimilate this hard fact, that you are responsible for your results, then you cannot make the journey to where you want to be. Getting over failure and finding success lies in first accepting personal responsibility. That means no excuses or blaming other people or random events. I found this hard to begin with, so I started out compromising slightly by saying to myself that despite some random events awarding me bad results I now take the stance that I control every action I take from now on, building successfully on what I can learn from what I have experienced in the past. The point is, we can prepare for the worst so as to be ready for all possibilities into the future. You cannot always shape the circumstances or the seasons but you do have the ability to change the way you react. So you assume control from now onwards.

So now everything in your life starts to change for the best when you dwell upon, analyse, and discover your own answers to these two real power questions.

Firstly, ask yourself constantly:

How did I create that situation?

Avoid the tendency to spend time blaming yourself about the past: rather, focus simply on today each evening for just a short time. Look back over your day briefly and appreciate anything you did which went well and analyse anything which could have gone better by asking how you created the situation. What actions and assumptions of yours led to the result you got? Being aware is the crux here. You are developing deep self awareness.

Secondly, ask yourself this:

What will I do differently next time to get the result I want?

How can you do better in the future?

This is so powerful because you now have the chance to change your actions in order to get the best result you want. You start to feel control over your life, instead of dreading the uncertainty of drifting towards the unknown. The instant you take all this on board, you feel a new confidence surging up within! It is totally awesome and I really hope you can experience this for yourself!

Other people will notice the change within you too: since our actions affect people in ways we can never imagine, like the ripples from a water drop falling into a river. Now you begin building the universe you experience in the way you desire. Incredible!

Become extraordinary by reading The Success Principles for yourself. ISBN 978-0-00-719508-4. Here are some key tips from the book.

  • Believing in yourself is an attitude – the choice of what you believe is up to you.
  • You get what you expect.
  • Master the habit of persistent sustained effort.
  • Brainstorm with the people inside the job to discover powerful ideas to improve the organization.
  • Pay the price: practise towards excellence every day – you will enjoy the benefits forever.
  • Be willing to put it all on the line for your dream.
  • Be willing to use your gifts to make this world a better place.
  • Take the time to give your individual opinion.
  • Nothing happens until you take action.
  • Engage others in your success. That’s why it’s called “cashflow” right?

Your success starts right now!

Think of something you have done really well recently. A skill you have mastered or some praise you have gained. Teach others how you achieved this. As you lift up others, so they, in turn, lift you. This begins the process of building your self reliance. And that is the podium upon which you orate! As you become more aware and appreciative of your inner wealth, so people the world over will be attracted magnetically into your field of influence and you will achieve astonishing results you can never imagine as yet. Free yourself and others from all limitations.

Taking 100% responsibility for your life doesn’t come easy, but it’s the key to attaining success. I have a Responsibility chapter in the Mental Attitude section of my upcoming book Selling Fearlessly. Take a look at the long alibi list Napoleon Hill provides in his class book Think and Grow Rich; you’ll shake your head in Wonder. When all the excuses, all the alibis, go out the window, you’ll be on the right track. Excellent post, Wayne; it doesn’t matter who wrote it–thank you for putting it up on your site.
