Ten Top Headlines That Get Good Traffic

There is a sneaky reason why I used that post title. It has more than one meaning depending upon where you are in your blogging experience.

For the beginning blogger, you’ll likely infer that the headline promises that you will get a good amount of traffic from reading this article.

For the intermediate blogger, the headline promises that you will get good quality traffic.

For the advanced blogger, the headline promises the reader copious amounts of quality traffic.

In this article, I’m going to reveal my best performing headlines for various reasons. Here they are listed in no particular order.

#1 – OptimizePress vs Profits Theme

Pepsi and Coke in CompetitionPeople are unsurprisingly researching solutions for products online.

When people search for one product name versus a competing product name, the likelihood is that the searcher has already made a buying decision and is looking to confirm their buying choice.

I have several articles which compare one product against another competing product and am always surprised by both the quantity and quality of traffic.

Here’s another example:

Popup Domination v WP Subscribers

Other comparisons could be Bluehost v Westhost, Aweber v Get Response, Windows v Mac OSX but to name a few.

#2 – Best Internet Marketing Tools

Internet Marketer's ToolboxPeople are obsessed with tools and love playing with them. They believe that investing in a good tool can help them move towards success… and they’re right. I’ve invested in plenty of different tools now that have moved me closer to what I desire to achieve online.

The headline makes sense because people always want the best of things, so a headline such as “Best Internet Marketing Tools” really does pull some great buyer traffic to your site.

#3 – Best Free WordPress Plugins

Free WordPress PluginsWe all know that WordPress plugins helps us to gain additional functionality to our site and gives our site a unique difference in a very crowded marketplace, however what could be better than having the words “best” and “free” in the same sentence?

People’s attachment to having the best and for free makes this a headline which pulls a good quantity of traffic, although they’re mainly information hunters rather than buyers.

However, if you set up your page well here, you can interlink to other “buyer pages”

#4 – Promote Yourself Online

Who wouldn’t want to advertise their services for free? You never know who might be reading the blog post like it’s a directory for services to Internet Marketers, so it only makes sense for people to take advantage of the offer I give for people to promote themselves.

# 5 – Will Smith: Wise Words & Success Secrets

Will SmithThe majority of the western world have an obsession about celebrities.

You only need to look at the paparazzi satisfying the insatiable demand of the American/British public.

This post attracts a lot of attention because Will Smith is famous and his words of wisdom carry some common credibility since he is a high earning actor.

# 6 – Intelligence Sucks

The headline here is controversial as people are curious as to why intelligence sucks. After all, we’re all conditioned from childhood to believe that intelligence is the trait that wins the game of life.

The kid that goes on to get the most qualifications gets the best jobs and earns the highest income.

#7 – Government and Mass Conspiracy

Who doesn’t like a good old fashioned conspiracy theory? Like it or not, the government have more control over you than you think!

This arouses curiosity in the reader’s mind and inspires your reader to click through and read about ‘mass conspiracy’ and how and why the government, a generally trusted authority, is involved in it.

#8 - How to Get DoFollow Backlinks Using CommentLuv

How to Get DoFollow Backlinks Using CommentLuvThis headline gives the promise of a very tangible result and a very actionable process all at the same time.

People love tangible results (ie. make $9,643 in 11 days or lose 17lb in 37 days) as they bring something measurable to something abstract and naturally more difficult to conceive.

People also love actionable step-by-step processes.

A good step by step process is often rewarded with lots of comments and lots of sharing, so it is well worth preparing this sort of content for your blog.

#9 – 5 Common Email Mistakes To Avoid

There’s no doubt about it… people are attached to their mistakes and want to know how they can save themselves a lot of pain by learning from the mistakes of others.

Who wouldn’t want to know the potential pitfalls that lie ahead should you make a few ill-informed judgements?

#10 – The “Illusion” of Direct Traffic

People want to know what they’ve been kept in the dark about. Why is “direct traffic” an illusion? Is everything not what it really seems?

A credible author writing a headline like this can pull a lot of traffic due to the curiosity factor, which is one of the top copywriting tricks to get your emails opened and blog posts read.

Best Premium WordPress Plugins

To be successful as a blogger, you’ll definitely need to ramp up your efforts using some of the best premium WordPress plugins.

Here are the best premium WordPress plugins that I give my full recommendation. These are premium plugins which requires an investment of your capital, however they’re all definitely worth their money.

#1 WP Subscribers

WP Subscribers is a superb list building plugin that can help you to put your list building efforts on turbo charge.

WP Subscribers

The more well known alternative plugin on the market that solves the same problem is Popup Domination 2. At the moment, Popup Domination 2 doesn’t quite offer the same level of features as WP Subscribers, although the popups do look great.

WP Subscribers enables you to create opt in forms as:

  • In your blog sidebar area
  • An entry popup
  • An exit popup
  • A popup which appears after a set number of pageviews
  • A header popup
  • A footer popup

#2 SEO Pressor

SEO Pressor

I don’t actually use SEO Pressor any more, however I still recommend it.

After using SEO Pressor for a while, you can predict the sort of feedback that the plugin gives you and you’ll do these checks automatically without thinking about it and without being reminded by SEO Pressor to do it.

So why didn’t I just keep it? Speed… I want a fast website and the more plugins you have, the slower your website will be in both the front end and admin area.

I know how to do on page optimization without SEO Pressor reminding me how to do it, so I elected to depend upon my blog content creation checklist to remind me rather than another plugin.

However, if you’re not quite sure how to optimise your on page SEO, then SEO Pressor is definitely a great little plugin to coach you through it.

#3 WP Syndicator

WP Syndicator is a great little plugin which enables you to syndicate your content on an array of blogging and microblogging platforms.

WP Syndicator

The real benefit of WP Syndicator isn’t the little amounts of traffic you’ll get from the blogging and micro-blogging platforms that you syndicate your content to.

It’s with the backlinks that are created over time, which will give your internal pages more relevance in the eyes of Google which will eventually lead to more search traffic from Google and other search engines.

#4 Keyword Winner

Keyword Winner can save you time and effort ensuring that you’re ranking for some high quality keywords before you even begin writing any content.

Keyword Winner

After all, why would you want to write and publish content that isn’t going to get any readers, or even buyers?

#5 SEO Smart Links Premium

There is actually a free version of this plugin which works OK. However, if you want more options and you really want to ramp up the internal link building within your blog to the next level to build page rank for your internal pages, then you need to sit up and pay attention to this plugin.

SEO Smart Links

This is the kind of plugin that you can easily not give much value to because the benefits are felt over the long term rather than producing instantaneous results.

Sadly, the Internet Marketing world is mainly made up of people who want instant results and aren’t willing to put in the

#6 WP Touch Pro

WP Touch Pro

WP Touch Pro helps you to present a mobile theme to your mobile readers.

There is a free version of the theme with less options for your users. It might be an idea to delve into your Google Analytics stats to see just how many of your viewers are browsing your site on their mobile devices.

#7 MaxBlogPress Ninja Affiliate

This plugin stores all your affiliate links in WordPress and converts keywords that appear anywhere in your blog into affiliate links. You can also use the tool to insert an affiliate link manually from your edit post/page areas.

How to Make Your Blog Speeds Suck Less

So… your blog speeds suck. You’re browsing around your own site and you’re thinking how the hell you can improve your blog’s speed to improve the visitor experience for users on your blog.

The Importance of Speed

Speed is now an even more important factor in determining the ranking of your posts as Google Analytics measures your page load time and feeds that information back to Google who factor it into their algorithm.

Google broadly looks for two things when you publish content…

  1. Relevance: Does the content you publish deliver on the solutions that the searcher is looking for?
  2. Visitor Experience: Page speeds and loading times are massively important in providing a great visitor experience.

This is still way less important than relevance but helps your site to reduce its bounce rate, increase stickiness (ie. pageviews per visit) and increases the overall visitor experience, which of course can help you build trust, relationships and conversions.

Tips to Increase Blog Speed

We all need a bit of a pointer in the right direction, so here goes…

#1 Ensure You’re Using a Reliable & Reputable Host

Don’t skimp here. This is one cost that you must take on as a blogger and at just $6-7 per month for shared hosting solutions from companies like Bluehost or Hostgator, there really is no excuse.

Don’t try anything wacky like hosting on your own servers or using a free hosting service. It just isn’t worth the hassle and downtime.

At the moment, I’m using Westhost business class hosting as I get more benefits than the traditional shared hosting accounts and access to WordPress experts when I contact their customer service. I trust a better class of hosting when I’m getting a good volume of traffic to my site.

#2 Use a Caching Plugin

A caching plugin can help you serve cached versions of your static web files which helps your pages to load faster and gives a better user experience. Static files are largely images, style sheets and some JavaScript. When these page elements are cached, they don’t need to be loaded every time a page is requested from the server, so dynamic elements of the page run at each runtime, however the static elements are just pulled to the browser from the site’s, or even the visitor’s browser cache.

W3 Total Cache

#3 Use Less Plugins

One of the common faults of bloggers is they like to tinker and I’m certainly no exception. I always want to see if there’s another plugin that will take my blog to the next level.

The challenge is using only the plugins that are, in some way, actually benefiting your blog. You can use some of the better plugins which are well coded to take care of your main problems.

I gave a special mention to many of the WordPress plugins that I’m personally using in my ‘Best Free WordPress Plugins’ post. The list is subject to change as I find new alternatives to deal with the demands and growing pains of a blog with increasing traffic and authority.

#4 Use Less Widgets

Widgets are cool because they enable you to build page elements within your blog that appear on every page. This may be good to show reader comments, popular posts, other commentators, social connect buttons, etc, however if you have too many, then not only will you confuse your visitors by giving too many choices but you will slow down the speed of your blog.

Every page a visitor arrives at within your blog, you should have a conversion goal. Sometimes this goal is to make a sale, sometimes the goal is to get an opt in to your email list or RSS Reader and other times it is simply to provide value and build relationships/your community and get engagement and vital feedback/research from comments.

#5 Use a Premium WordPress Theme

If you’re creating a standard blog theme, don’t mess around with free WordPress themes. Sure, they’re free in terms of money but they could be costing you a lot more than you think!

  • A slow site due to bad coding
  • A site with little or no SEO tools or considerations.

If you buy a good quality WordPress theme, you can cut down significantly on the number of plugins since much of the functionality can be done from right within the theme.

Don’t scrimp! I only recommend two themes for bloggers.

==> Check out WooThemes

I personally use a combination of a few different WooThemes to achieve the style of this site.

The themes are superbly coded, looks slick and has great SEO functionality (although I personally choose to turn it off in favour of the WordPress SEO plugin from Yoast.com).

==> Check out Thesis

This was the theme that I would have used had it not been for spotting a special WooTheme called Canvas. Thesis is highly rated by many top bloggers and I used it during the testing phase of redesigning my blog.

#6 Use Tools to Assess and Monitor Page Speed

This is important because blogs can slow down very slowly over time as you increase the database bloat, install more plugins, etc. You need a maintenance schedule to stay on top of this. A couple of tools that I recommend that you use to monitor your blog’s speed are:

  • Pingdom Tools is possibly the most awesome site for checking the health of your DNS Server and to test your page loading times.

The site really helps you to understand which components of your web pages load in what order and how long each of those components take. From this, you can identify problematic elements that you can either address or even entirely eliminate. You’re likely to find some page load bottlenecks that you never knew existed.

#7 Compress Your Images

Images are often oversized for the purposes of fast loading web pages.

As well as optimising images using software such as GIMP, Paint.net or even PhotoShop if you’re a bit whizzy with it, you can also use a couple of quick, free and simple online tools to quickly get your images web optimised. A couple of great tools are:

#8 Compress Your Database

Reducing the size of your database is important because it often accumulates bloat over time. This can especially be the case if your tables gather and store additional data that isn’t essential for the running of your blog.

#9 Limit Revisions on Blog Posts

Limit the number of revisions that are held within your database tables. The default for WordPress is to store every revision, which you can see within the ‘revisions’ section of your post. You don’t need all the old revisions, however they’re taking up vital resources as you grow your site.

The bigger your site becomes, the more important this sort of maintenance becomes.

#10 Use a Content Delivery Network

A Content Delivery Network (or CDN) delivers your static content from a location which is much closer to the visitor than what it is likely to be from just your web server. As mentioned earlier, static content includes CSS files, images and some JavaScript.

When this content is compressed and served from locations closer to the visitor, the result is a much faster loading time for the end user resulting in a more pleasurable user experience.

I use Amazon S3 and MaxCDN for different things on my blog. Max CDN serves the static content using what’s called a mirrored pull zone. You can research this from the Max CDN website if you choose to set this up. I use Amazon S3 to host my video files and a technology called Cloudfront serves them which makes the streaming of my video content very fast.

Max CDN

Summary

There’s no doubt about it… going through the pain barrier of speeding your WordPress blog up will help you to reap dividends in so many ways including:

  • Increasing your blog’s perceived authority with readers
  • Improving the visitor experience of your readers
  • Increasing pageviews per visit (blog stickiness)
  • Fostering deeper relationships with your readers since they stick around longer for the relationship to build
  • More authority from Google (ie. higher rankings, more traffic and possibly increased pagerank)
  • … and ultimately higher conversions!

Please remember to test your blog speed before and after optimisation so you can see the gains for your blog and your readers.

Do you know any optimisation tricks and tips that I’ve missed? Perhaps you know a trick or tool which can transform blog speeds? Either way, let us know in the comments.

Blogging Strategy: How to Blog Strategically

I’m sure you’ve had a similar experience…

You’ve been chatting with friends about playing the lottery with the hope and dare I say it, desperation to win the National Lottery.

In the UK, we have a National Lottery and a European Lottery (called the Euro Millions) which millions of people buy into every week with the expression “you’ve got to be in it to win it” running through their minds as they pay to play.

The challenge with this thinking is that it keeps people trapped in hope and a state of disempowerment to change their lives. They have a belief that something needs to happen to them to make a change in their lives. In fact, most people playing the lottery have no better wealth strategy and would rather leave their future to sheer “destiny”, and what long odds they are in coming in as winners and being able to retire from the job they so desperately want to ditch.

Lottery Futility

Lottery Hope

To win the UK National Lottery, the odds are a mere 1 chance in 13,983,816; and to win the Euro Millions, the odds are 1 chance in 116,531,800. So if you were to play every lottery game that comes out (twice a week for each), you’d need to play for 134,459 years to win the National Lottery and play for 1,120,498 years to win the Euro Millions.

Now, don’t get me wrong… it could happen, but is this really a good strategy to build your wealth and make the most of the one lifetime you have?

Playing the lottery is definitely not a strategy that I want to engage in. I avoid it like the plague and resent it for the way it programmes people to hope for the best as opposed to taking responsibility for their own lives.

The old adage that springs to mind is that there are three types of people in the world:

  1. Those that make things happen [The few]
  2. Those that watch things happen [The many]
  3. Those that wonder “what the hell happened” [The far too many]

Which type of person are you going to be?

Blogging is the same! Are you creating enough web properties and developing them into traffic assets that you can use again and again to build your main blog?

Are you using a tool like Market Samurai to conduct thorough market research into your blog topic, so you can be sure that your blog post will actually receive traffic from the search engines?

Are you monitoring how responsive your list is by measuring open and clickthrough rates?

Are you relying on hope by simply not collecting any numbers before you post to your blog? Are you not tracking your page’s performance through split testing? Are you tracking user engagement through comments, tweets, likes and the new Google +1 ‘s?

If you’re not monitoring these numbers and actively considering how you can improve upon these numbers, then you’re up against bottlenecks that you’ll never likely crack. This is akin to playing the lottery in sheer hope and desperation of a result. You don’t expect to win the lottery, you simply hope that some day it will change! Don’t let this be your blogging strategy.

Let’s move from a mere hope that something might happen to an overwhelming expectation that something is about to happen.

This shift in mindset comes when you commit to running a data driven business.

The question then becomes:

How do I develop and build an Internet business that is data driven?

This is one of the most overlooked aspects in Internet Marketing. To most people, it just ain’t sexy! Setting up tests, monitoring them and making tweaks just seems tedious and doesn’t return an obvious and immediate dividend for the efforts and energy you expend. Who wants a minor increase of just a couple of percentage points?

Although it doesn’t sound that appetising, you definitely should do!

Ways to become a data driven business include:

  • Split testing with Google Website Optimizer/Flip Tracker
  • Using the Aweber split testing tool to measure headline performance
  • Using Aweber form tracking to track opt ins
  • Measuring traffic and identifying/implementing new traffic strategies/tactics
  • Using Rank Tracker tools like in Market Samurai to monitor rank changes for your target keywords
  • Use a tool such as Crazy Egg to monitor clicks and interaction on your site

Developing a data driven business is one of the best decisions that you’ll ever make in your Internet Marketing business. I only hope that you’ll commit and make that decision right now!

What commitments can you make to become a data driven business?

Perhaps you know tools and resources that can help you to become a data driven business? Let us know about them.
