The New Rules of Affiliate Marketing

Since the recent FTC legislation, the rules of affiliate marketing have changed forever. The old rules were visit Clickbank, get a hoplink of a product that you believe will convert, advertise it using AdWords, article marketing or forum posts. Now the FTC forces you to explicitly state when you will be receiving an affiliate commission for a promotion. Not all marketers openly declare their affiliate relationship with the product owner.

In email marketing, this disclosure is usually done in the email signature and often little else is offered in the way of bonuses or added value to help the prospect make a buying decision.

The new rules of affiliate marketing means that the affiliate should attempt to make the buying decision a more attractive proposition to buy the product from them than buying the product directly from the product owner. After all, the buyer is going to buy from someone so you might as well offer additional bonuses of value that make the product purchase a more attractive proposition.

Although some people do, people shouldn’t really have an issue with buying through someone’s affiliate link especially when they trust the advisor that presents the offer to them – the product will be the same price to the customer. It doesn’t matter to the customer if the affiliate gets a split of the product price or if the vendor takes the entire commission.

It’s worth noting that when offering bonuses for an affiliate, don’t just offer some private label rights products that are [supposedly] worth $5,000 but offer a complimentary product of value. This means that the bonus should have a connection with the problem being solved by the product itself.

When you provide valuable bonuses that enhance the product you’re promoting, you can sometimes get an email from people in your subscriber list asking if they can buy a product through your affiliate link.
